Gas test pressure requirements by Colorado city
Updated Oct 17, 2026
The model fuel gas code (IFGC Section 406.4.1) sets the test at 1.5 times the highest working pressure, and never less than 3 psig, held for a minimum time. Many Colorado cities raise the pressure, the time or both. 31 of the 41 jurisdictions in CodeCheck Colorado change the gas test.
What does the fuel gas code require for a pressure test?
The model rule has two parts. The test pressure is 1.5 times the most the system will run at, with a floor of 3 psig. The test must then hold for a minimum time without losing pressure. The state fuel gas code is based on the 2024 IFGC.
Why do Colorado cities require a higher test?
A higher test finds small leaks the model minimum can miss. Many cities write their own test pressure and time into local amendments, often with a separate, higher test for welded pipe and for systems running above 14 inches of water column.
Which cities change the gas test?
31 jurisdictions in the app have a local gas test rule. Free samples already public on city pages are shown. The rest are in the app.

What about welded pipe and 2 psi systems?
The model code uses the same formula for every system. Several Colorado cities set a separate, higher test for welded pipe, larger pipe or elevated-pressure systems. Those numbers are in the app for each city.
My gauge dropped. Did I fail?
The test has to hold without losing pressure. If it drops, find the leak, repair it and run the test again.
